Preparing for a Strong 2025 by Looking at 2024 Starting Now
As we have embarked into the last quarter of the year, it’s hard to believe how much has changed. It feels like just yesterday I was helping my sister move in after a difficult Christmas. Now, here we are, with 2024 nearly behind us. This is the perfect time to pause, reflect on the year, and start planning for what’s next.
Looking Back: What Did 2024 Teach You?
2024, so far, has been a year of unexpected growth and transformation for me, personally and professionally. It felt much like the journey of a caterpillar — starting off in one form, only to find myself in the cocoon of change, evolving into something new.
When my sister moved in, I was faced with unplanned responsibilities — mostly with taking in 4 pets — three Chihuahua-mixed dogs and an orange tabby cat, adjusting to a new home life situation. It wasn’t easy, but it forced me to re-prioritize, balancing my personal commitments with professional goals.
Through it all, I learned that sometimes, when life changes suddenly, we have to find strength we didn’t know we had. One of the most important things that I have been learning on this journey of life for me is the need to prioritize self-care. Joining a Health and Wellness Program was a crucial step in that direction, reminding me that in order to support others, I first have to take care of myself.
What has this year taught you? What were your biggest wins so far?
So far, my wins hasn’t always been about big moments — they were about progress. A standout for me was finding self-development and Christian ministry tools and activities, books, and Facebook groups to help not only heal from past toxic relationships, but understanding my own self-worth and value.
It was less about relationship advice and more about deep, inner work. The real transformation is a process of rebuilding my self-worth and confidence, which set the foundation for everything I hope to achieve in the future. I’m still in the program doing work, but it has really helped change my outlook for the reminder of 2024 and beyond.
Another significant win was joining a local business community and participating in networking events that helped me connect with entrepreneurs and other like-minded people. These opportunities have allowed me to expand my horizons, share my story, and even see my books finally get printed — a dream I had been working toward for a long time.
These wins taught me that transformation isn’t just about what happens inside the cocoon; it’s about how you choose to soar once you emerge.
After all, life really is about the journey, not the destination as quoted by American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson.
What Challenges Have You Overcome?
Transformation doesn’t come without challenges, and this year has had its fair share. Balancing the emotional weight of losing my childhood home with being a part-time caretaker for my sister and her pets was one of the toughest parts of 2024. It was frustrating, draining, and at times, overwhelming. My world was turned upside down. However, as I have navigated these difficult moments, I leaned into my faith, resilient training, my personal goals and focus on well-being, which became my anchor.
Involving myself in the community was another way to overcome these challenges. Networking with entrepreneurs and attending events helped me find purpose and direction. It reminded me that success is as much about internal growth as it is about external achievements.
What Valuable Lessons Have You Learned?
Perhaps the most important lesson so far that 2024 has taught me was the power of resilience and grace. From the moment my sister and the pets moved in, I realized that life doesn’t always go as planned. Having four pets literally stressed me out. I’ve always had one pet. I’m not used to having four untrained pets who are in their senior age and do not go outside to go to the bathroom. When I did have a dog (RIP Lita, I miss you everyday ðŸ˜ðŸ’”), I had a schedule and as a military veteran and working professional, I am used to being on a schedule.
Soooo….I’m learning that flexibility, patience, and self-compassion have been the key to navigating both personal and professional challenges. While I have had resilience training in the past, it’s always a good idea to keep on learning, absorbing knowledge and gaining the tools you need for emotional intelligence, especially when new situations want to make you fly off the handle or make you want to break down emotionally (I’m guilty of this).
Therapy sessions, time with friends, quiet times and moments with myself, prayer, church services, and community involvement were instrumental in keeping me grounded. These moments weren’t just about talking through difficulties, but about learning how to thrive in the face of them.
At one point during the Summer, we had a local agricultural event that was open to the community and it reminded me of the importance of giving back and being part of something larger than myself. It was a fun and beautiful way to round out the year and step into the final season, full of gratitude for what has been and excitement for what’s to come.
Focusing on my well-being and personal goals has become a welcoming reminder of the famous Serenity Prayer, which states, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.”
My goal for 2025 is to scale my small business dreams by launching my first mini course for transitioning military service members!
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
Taking the time to reflect not only allows you to celebrate your progress but also equips you to step into 2025 with clarity and intention.
Reflection is just the beginning. Now it’s time to take action and set yourself up for a successful 2025.
Here are a few steps to get started:
- Set Clear, Actionable Goals
It’s easy to set vague resolutions like “I want a better job” or “I want to be healthier.” But these goals need to be specific, measurable, and actionable.
For example, instead of saying “I want a better job,” aim for “I want to update my résumé, apply to three new positions by January, and complete a certification course by February.”
2. Update Your Résumé and Online Presence
If you’re in the process of transitioning or looking to advance your career, make sure your résumé is updated to reflect your achievements this year.
Don’t forget to refresh your LinkedIn profile and other professional platforms as well.
3. Invest in Personal Development
Whether it’s through additional training, certifications, or mentorship, invest in yourself.
There are plenty of resources available to help you develop new skills — take advantage of them.
4. Build and Strengthen Your Network
The connections you’ve made this year can play a pivotal role in your future. Keep building relationships and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance when needed.
Here’s the key: small, deliberate steps taken today can create the momentum you need to hit the ground running in the new year. Start planning now, so that when 2025 arrives, you’re ready to make it your most empowered and successful year yet.
Remember, growth is a journey, and it’s often the small, consistent efforts that make the biggest impact. As you reflect on 2024 and prepare for what’s ahead, take the time to appreciate how far you’ve come, and get excited about where you’re going.
Let’s end 2024 strong and step into 2025 with confidence, clarity, and purpose.
Reflect. Plan. Thrive.
