The Beauty of Boudoir Photography: A Celebration of Self-Love and Empowerment

There was a time when I viewed my body with critical eyes — seeing only fat, flaws, imperfections, and battle scars from my past. My journey has been one of deep healing, from the depths of PTSD, depression, and self-doubt to a place of love, confidence, and acceptance.

Boudoir photography has been a powerful part of that transformation.

My first two boudoir sessions, back in 2015–16, were shadowed by internal struggles. At that time, I was barely holding myself together, masking the pain and navigating self-esteem battles that felt impossible to win. Those photos captured a woman trying to find her worth, searching for confidence, but still weighed down by the chains of trauma, low self-esteem and self-doubt.

But this time — this time was different.

This session was a rebirth, a reflection of the Phoenix that has risen from the ashes of her past. It was not about hiding pain behind poses or forcing confidence where I felt none. This session was about embracing my body, my journey, and every beautiful mark that tells my story.

What is boudoir?

Boudoir is a style of photography that captures intimate, sensual, and often empowering portraits, typically of women, in a private, personal setting. The word “boudoir” comes from the French term for a woman’s private dressing room or bedroom, reflecting the cozy and intimate nature of these photoshoots.

Key Features of Boudoir Photography:

  • Empowerment & Confidence — Boudoir is not just about looking sexy; it’s about feeling confident, embracing your body, and celebrating self-love.
  • Intimacy & Personal Expression — The sessions are often styled to reflect the subject’s personality, whether that’s romantic, playful, artistic, or bold.
  • Lingerie & Styling Choices — While many choose lingerie, boudoir isn’t limited to it. Some opt for oversized sweaters, elegant dresses, or even being tastefully wrapped in sheets.
  • Professional Posing & Lighting — Boudoir photographers specialize in guiding poses and using soft, flattering lighting to create stunning, artistic images.
  • For Yourself or a Loved One — While some choose boudoir photography as a gift for a partner, many do it as a way to celebrate their own journey, self-love, or body acceptance.

Boudoir photography is more than just an intimate photoshoot — it is a statement of self-love, an act of reclaiming your body and celebrating the woman you are. Society tells us that beauty is one thing: smooth, flawless, and perfectly sculpted.

But real beauty? Real beauty is the way our bodies carry the stories of our lives. It is in the stretch marks, the curves, the scars, and even the parts we once wished we could change. It is in the confidence to say, “This is me, and I love her.”

The Big Day

I had been anticipating the day with a mix of excitement and nervousness. It turned out to be more than just a photo session; it was a transformative journey that celebrated every part of who I am.

Morning Preparation

The day began at a local salon with the beautician, Albani, that the photographer partnered with, a true maestro of hair and makeup. She transformed my hair into a fiery cascade of reds, oranges, and yellows, each strand shimmering with the hues of a Phoenix rising from the ashes. The process was meticulous, with the hairstylist blending each color expertly, ensuring the fiery theme was vividly brought to life. Her passion for her craft was evident in every brush stroke, and her attention to detail made me feel like a living canvas of her artistry.

The Boudoir Shoot

The next day, I arrived at the studio. I was greeted by Jacque, the photgrapher, whose warmth and enthusiasm immediately put me at ease.

As for makeup, the beautician, Albani’s expertise was just as profound. Initially, I had envisioned a bold red eye and lip, but Albani guided me towards a more balanced look — a smoky neutral eye with a bold red lip that perfectly complemented my fiery hair without overwhelming my features. Her advice was invaluable, and the final look was absolutely stunning. Throughout the process, she was not only a stylist but a comforting presence, reminding me that today was all about self-love and celebration.

The time arrived for my photo shoot! The studio was a sanctuary, with beautifully crafted rooms designed to celebrate the beauty and strength of women. Jacque, with her gentle coaching and encouraging words, made me feel completely at ease. She helped me see that the canvas was not just the backdrop but myself, and together, we brought it to life with every pose and smile.

The shoot itself was empowering. I was at a place in my life where I finally was happy with myself, which resulted in enjoying the moment while embracing my flaws and all! It was a celebration of my journey — a woman who has overcome, healed, and emerged stronger than ever.

Each click of the camera was a reaffirmation of my worth and beauty. Jacque’s skill in coaching, and capturing the right light and the perfect angle, made me feel seen in ways I had never experienced before. The atmosphere was filled with positivity and affirmation, making every moment enjoyable. Feelings of empowerment and self-acceptance evoked a true masterpiece.

I left the studio feeling like a Phenomenal Woman, just as Maya Angelou described — full of grace, strength, and undeniable beauty. One of my favorite scriptures from the Bible is Psalm 139:14, which I quote often. It states: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Today, I truly embodied that verse.

This experience with Albani and Jacque was transformative! More than anything, I am excited to carry this renewed sense of self into every aspect of my life. I am a Phoenix, risen and renewed, ready to shine brighter than ever before.

When I saw my photos, I didn’t just see images — I saw me. A woman who has fought battles, faced fears, and emerged stronger. A woman who has learned to love herself in a way she never thought possible.

And that is a message I want to share with other women: you are beautiful, just as you are. Your body tells your story, and that story is worth celebrating.

That is why Jacque and I are on a mission to help women see themselves in a new light. To break free from the unrealistic beauty standards we’ve been conditioned to believe and instead, embrace the truth — real women have curves, scars, and imperfections. And that is what makes us beautiful.

If you’ve ever considered doing a boudoir shoot but hesitated, let this be your sign. Do it for you. Do it to celebrate the woman you are. You don’t need permission, a “perfect” body, or a special occasion — your self-love journey is reason enough. Step into your power, embrace your beauty, and allow yourself to see what the world has always known: you are radiant.

This is just the beginning of a greater conversation — one that I hope will empower women to celebrate their bodies and their journeys with pride. Because we are more than our pasts, more than our struggles — we are strong, beautiful, and worthy of celebration.
