The Cost of Self-Care: Why You’re Worth the Investment

Let’s talk about self-care.
It’s how we build up the part of us that gives.
Not the Instagrammable kind with candles and face masks (although, yes, please to both), but the real, often costly kind that takes time, intention, and sometimes money.
The other day, I treated myself to a facial—something I try to do monthly. It’s not cheap, and let’s be honest, wellness services are rarely covered by sick leave or insurance. But walking out of that appointment, I was reminded of something powerful: I am worth the investment.
Too often, especially as women, caregivers, veterans, or professionals, constantly giving to others, we tend to put ourselves last. We push through exhaustion, show up even when we’re running on fumes, and convince ourselves that rest or pampering is a luxury. But what if we flipped the script?
Self-care is not selfish. It’s foundational.

We can’t pour into others from an empty cup. Whether you're managing a business, raising a family, supporting your community, or just trying to keep your head above water—your energy, clarity, and well-being matter. They directly impact how you show up for others.
Yes, it costs. Sometimes in dollars, sometimes in time, sometimes in saying “no” to other people’s needs so you can say “yes” to your own (something that I’m learning to do). But the return on that investment? Peace. Energy. Clarity. Confidence. A stronger version of you.
And that stronger version? She’s the one who can change lives.
So, if you’ve been waiting for permission to take care of yourself, let this be it.
Book the massage. Take the nap. Go on a solo walk. Get the facial. Say the hard word, “No.” Go on a spiritual retreat. Do something for yourself that you’ve been waiting or saving up to do “Someday.” Step away for a moment if you need to.
Because you matter. And your wellness isn’t optional—it’s essential.
Self-care comes in different ways. Let your “Me” time be anything you want it to be. If you love makeup like me, splurge a little. If you’re on a budget, see if you can get a brand sample to try from the brand or a cheaper offer on Mercari, Poshmark, or eBay. Subscribe to makeup subscriptons such as, Ipsy to try samples on a budget.
If you love music, let it be your ‘Me’ time therapy. Sometimes, I listen to differnet YouTube videos and sample differnt audios, create playlists, sing and dance to the beat of my own drum in the freedom and safety of my own personal living space.
Enjoy writing? Take some time to journal and reflect as I often do.
Did You Know? Science supports the benefits of writing things down with a pen and paper, particularly for learning, memory retention, and cognitive engagement.
Write poetry or attend a “Speak Easy” or poetry night to try something fun and be inspired. Attend a writers workshop to learn how to write books or take some time to write letters to family and friends.
Do you love art? Take a pottery class, or a “Paint n’ Sip” party. Take an hour to learn to draw something you haven’t learned how to draw yet. Or maybe you like to doodle on the side of your paper (like I did when I was in high school while listening to a lecture or watching TV) - so, go and do that.
Treat yourself to a lovely dinner out or go for a nice massage or facial like I did! I always feel relaxed and refreshed afterwards.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as a yoga exercise, or a moment for meditation, maybe a morning walk, enjoying some quiet time on the patio, backyard, or a leisurely time at the park. Other times, it’s getting into a “Me” routine of mindfulness and beauty and staying at home, pampering yourself.
There are SO MANY wonderful things and ideas out there to try and do. These are just a few ideas to inspire you to do something for yourself.
Why? Like L’Oreal’s slogan, “Because you’re worth it.” :-)
